The Ole Miss Watch: NCAA Sanctions?

Jesus Martinez | Main Columnist

February 2, 2016:

Ole Miss is being slammed down for NCAA violations. It is believed that the University has 28 infractions of rules, and the NCAA will take that into effect when they will give them stipulations for the 2016-17 athletic year. Friday (1/29/16), the University of Mississippi athletics program was charged with over 30 rule violations by the NCAA. It is alleged that 5 violations correlate to the Laremy Tunsil situation that occurred last year. He received improper benefits and illegal gifts that were not allowed on under NCAA regulations, and was suspended seven games because of this. Ultimately, these violations will effect recruiting and create an obstacle of success.
As for the punishments, infractions can be rated on three levels:

Level I
Level II
Level III

Level I is the most serious violations, and if claimed to be Level I, a football program can receive the NCAA Death Penalty. If any sanctions occur within the University, then it could affect them within recruiting. Players won’t want to go to Ole Miss because “they won’t be on National TV, or they can’t play in a bowl game.” Stay tuned for updates.

February 9, 2016:

The Ole Miss Football team is being slammed for nearly half of the alleged violations within this investigation. Today, the football program was cited in 13 out of 28 infractions. This is understandable, since football is the most popular sport for most college universities.

Although these violations could affect the school, Ole Miss athletic director Ross Bjork told ESPN.com last Wednesday on National Signing Day that the school looked forward to presenting its side to the NCAA. "We're not going to run away from anything," Bjork told ESPN.com. "I know what we stand for, what we do and the integrity in this room."

February 12, 2016:

The investigation within into the University of Mississippi is over. The 90 day period of investigating has finished, and Bjork believes that the University has done nothing wrong. Ross Bjork said “the school has not received, and probably won’t get” a rumored "second letter" concerning more NCAA violations, has not been charged with lack of institutional control. Football Head Coach Hugh Freeze was not named by the NCAA in any wrongdoing.

April 27, 2016:

With sanctions not being a likely possibility, we now turn ahead into the NFL Draft, where the Ole Miss Rebels have 3 players who could rank as high as Number #1 on their respective positions. Laremy Tunsil has an opportunity to go top three within the draft, as he is by far the best athlete in this draft class. Nckemdiche is a physical specimen at the Defensive End spot, but recent speculations about off-field issues (in addition to poor stats) has caused his stock to plummet. Treadwell is the best Wide Receiver in this draft, but his 40 time and vertical jump (4.65, 32') has led to concerns about how he could play in the NFL. Nevertheless, every player has their set of strengths and weaknesses when being evaluated, so having minor concerns isn't going to make these talents undrafted players, right?

April 28, 2016:

UPDATE. Laremy Tunsil may have prompted an NCAA investigation. Minutes before the NFL Draft started, his twitter account got hacked with a video of him smoking a bong. This isn't the first time he has had off-field issues. Although he claims that the video is old, it could very much affect his draft stock.

April 28, 2016:

After 12 picks, Laremy Tunsil is finally selected 13th overall. One scout claimed that his video would drop him down "very far" in the draft. However, this didn't appear to happen at all, as he only fell 8-10 spots to what his projected selection would have been. Jack Conklin and Ronnie Stanley (both play OT) were selected ahead of him.

April 28, 2016:

UPDATE. It is not going well for Tunsil right now. Now his Instagram account got hacked, leaking out text messages with illegal boosters. This actually may start a NCAA investigation, since he is notorious for doing the same thing in 2013. The messages come back from 2015, when Tunsil asked for help paying his rent.

May 1, 2016:

As I said, Laremy Tunsil's posts would start an NCAA investigation. What would you know, it did. Ole Miss announced today that they are prompting a self-investigation.

May 29, 2016:

Friday, Ole Miss announces that the University will suffer NCAA sanctions for the football team. The football department self-imposed penalties, which include the loss of double digit scholarships over the next two years.

June 1, 2016:

The program will dock itself 10 football scholarships over the next three seasons (two in 2016, and four each in 2017 and 2018), plus one it's counting from the 2015 season. It also self-imposes a $159,352 fine, and "involved staff" will undergo "additional rules education" on NCAA policy. This is the end of the updates. Ole Miss has gone through their punishment and look to improve on their 10-3 record.
