SB Champ Justin Tuck Calls it Quits

Chris Giraldo | January 31, 2016

Defensive end Justin Tuck announced his retirement Monday afternoon via his twitter account. The former Giant had been playing in Oakland the previous 2 seasons.

Drafted in the 3rd round (74th overall) of the 2005 draft, he had been considered one of the best at his position in the last decade. Tuck finished with a total of 66.5 sacks, 60.5 of them coming during his time in New York.  A 2 time Pro Bowler and one time All Pro, he is one of the notable pieces in what was the great pass rush the Giants established during their last two Super Bowl that also consisted of Osi Umenyiora, Mathias Kiwamuka, Jason Pierre-Paul and Hall of Famer Michael Strahan. He is also the only player to have multiple sacks in multiple Super Bowls.

After the 2013-2014 NFL regular season, Tuck hit free agency and expressed his desire to stay with the Giants but they didn’t offer him a lot in terms of money. In Mid-March of 2014 he signed a 2 year/11 million dollar deal with the Raiders. A pectoral injury in October ended his 2015-2016 season and ultimately his career.

During an interview on The Michael Kay Show, Tuck stated he would love to work in the booth but has his mind focused on being with his family and traveling. He was asked if the large number of CTE cases amongst former NFL players scared him. Justin would reply by saying “I know what I signed up for when I entered the league.” He also hopes to sign a 1 day contract and retire as a New York Giant.

This story also comes one day after Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Calvin Johnson informed Lions coach Jim Caldwell that 2015 would be his last season. Two notable names have stepped down in back to back days, the NFL saw something similar last year at this time.
