Chargers stay in San Diego for 2016 Season

Jesus Martinez | Main Columnist

After a roller-coaster process of the NFL relocation process this off-season, the Chargers have decided to stay in San Diego for the 2016 season. The chairman, Dean Spanos, claims that the staff will negotiate with politicians and businessmen about creating a new stadium. This comes a sigh of relief to many Chargers fans, who believed San Diego would be leaving to LA after announcing that the Chargers and the Rams would share Inglewood stadium, a $1.4 billion dollar stadium set to be made in 2017. This would be similar to the current partnership the New York Giants and Jets are currently having with Metlife Stadium.

It is speculated that the Chargers move to LA in 2017 would be a fallback plan if the city cannot build a stadium in that amount of time. Fortunately, when the Rams, Chargers and Raiders were planning to move to LA on day 1 of the relocation period, the NFL released good news to further help this situation. To whom would stay within their own city would receive $100 million dollars to further upgrade their stadium or use to help finance a new one.

Meanwhile, the Raiders are still planning to move out of Oakland, since they were one of the teams to apply for relocation. This is rather unsurprising, as they currently share a stadium with the Oakland Athletics, their stadium isn't built to NFL standards, and attendance for Sunday games was within the bottom 5 of the league from 2010 to 2015. There is speculation that they may move to Las Vegas, as Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Aldson is proposing the idea with a $1 billion dollar stadium within UNLV campus. But as for now, we have no official word on where the Raiders may end up. And so we wait.

But as for now, San Diego Chargers fans may breathe again.
