NFL Draft Scouting Report: Evan Engram

Jesus Martinez | Main Columnist
NFL Draft Reports (Tight Ends)

-Welcome to a new series where me and Chris Giraldo scout some of the best athletes in this years draft. As more and more information is given, we will update accordingly. Or maybe not. We are humans too. In this report we look at general information of a prospect, his off field history, strengths and weaknesses on the field, a summary and a draft projection. Without further ado, lets begin.

ON FIELD
STRENGTHS
WEAKNESSES
-At 10 inches, he has some really good hands for an NFL prospect
-Used to his full potential (2300 receiving yards; 900 this season)
-Good route runner
-Great ability to fake out the defense by selling the run on fake plays
-Good break on hips
-Solid production (which is all you can ever ask from a Tight End)
-Plays wing more than Tight End, so there would need to be an adjustment period for an NFL Team drafting him
-Drops some catches
-Can’t really depend on him to block consistently
-Needs to work on getting back to the ball

OFF FIELD
  • Two Time SEC Community Service Team Member
  • Awarded Pop Warner College Football Award to dedicate his service off the field
  • Off field rating is clean and will actually help his draft stock in this process.

OVERVIEW:

Here we see Evan Engram, a Tight End prospect that has actual first round talent. This doesn;t equate to him actually being selected in the first round, as this Tight End core is the best in recent memory. With Njoku and Howard ahead of him in the rankings, and because of player needs, he probably won’t get selected in Day 1. Don’t discredit his ability to play the game of football though. He was a productive player throughout his career at Ole Miss, racking up over 2300 yards and 15 TDs as a Tight End. He may not be a round 1 prospect, but is a good route runner and has proven ability to perform to full potential. His Combine and Senior Bowl performances only solidified his status as a top 3 tight end, and and early second round pick, and possible first.

DRAFT PROJECTION: LATE FIRST-EARLY SECOND ROUND
