NFL Draft Scouting Report: Corn Elder

Jesus Martinez | Main Columnist
NFL Draft Reports (Cornerbacks)

-Welcome to a new series where me and Chris Giraldo scout some of the best athletes in this years draft. As more and more information is given, we will update accordingly. Or maybe not. We are humans too. In this report we look at general information of a prospect, his off field history, strengths and weaknesses on the field, a summary and a draft projection. Without further ado, lets begin.

ON FIELD
STRENGTHS
WEAKNESSES
-Exceptional when it comes to pursuit angles
-Explosive player with quick speed
-Good footwork technique (former basketball career had something to do with it)
-Good play recognition
-Excellent when covering the flat
-QB’s rarely throw the ball to him, which means his coverage is solid.
(Only one instance this year where he has given up more than 50 receiving yards).
-Has a lack of frame (5’10, 180), which means
that teams looking at him would likely draft him in the nickel spot to guard slot receivers.
-Block shedding isn’t a strong suit
-Hasn’t shown ability to be a ballhawk corner.

OFF FIELD
  • Coaches and players say that he is a “nice guy” that doesn’t cause any problems
  • Has had no problems with the football program
  • Former All-State basketball player; gave up hoop dreams to focus on football
  • Therefore, he has a clean off field record.

OVERVIEW:
Some of you may know Corn Elder as the legendary man who returned the 8 lateral kick for a Touchdown against Duke on Halloween in 2015. Not me, I know him as one of the best corners in the country. Manny Diaz emphasizes corners that can tackle, Corn Elder’s biggest sure can do tha well. He is the best tackling cornerback prospect, as multiple times throughout the year we have seen that claim being backed up (14 tackles against UNC, 2.5 for loss). His size isn’t ideal to play at the next level, but his game is surely NFL material, as he is ready to perform whenever given the opportunity. He is a good cover corner that doesn’t allow many passes to go his way (under 300 passing yards given up in 2016), and can break up a lot of passes. He also has shown that he is a durable corner, as he never left the field on defense when he played against conference opponents. He is a playmaker at his corner position, and in 2015 we saw Elder make his impact on Special Teams. Although this cornerback class is one of the best in recent history, Corn Elder will make his presence in the NFL in whatever position he is put, regardless of where he’s picked.

DRAFT PROJECTION: MIDDLE 2ND ROUND.
